From providing instant cooling to maintaining the freshness of your fruits and vegetables, refrigerators have become ubiquitous in every household. If you are looking to buy a new refrigerator, it can be confusing to choose among the variety of options and brands available in the market.
There are many aspects to consider, like door type, energy efficiency, capacity and price. To make this task easier, we have created a simple refrigerator buying guide to help you zero down on the best refrigerator that is best suited to cater to your need and requirements:
- Size: There is a recommended capacity for a specific number of people in the household. For example, a couple can go for a 50-80 litre fridge, while for a family of four, a 250-330 litre fridge will be required. On the other hand, for a family of 6 or more, you will need a higher capacity, and choosing a capacity of 350 litres or more would meet the requirements.
- Refrigerator door types: There are five refrigerator door types you can choose from: Double door, single door, side-by-side, bottom freezers and French doors.
- Single door refrigerators: This is the most common type of refrigerator with a capacity of 165-280 litres. Given the size, they have limited shelves and compartments. They cost anywhere between 10,000-20,000 INR.
- Double door refrigerators: Double door refrigerators usually have a capacity of 235-415 litres, and have substantial space. The freezer is situated above the main fresh-food storage compartment. They are also frost-free, and do not require defrosting like single door fridges.
- Bottom freezer: These types of refrigerators are rare in India, and is a sub- segment of the double door refrigerator. The only difference is that the freezer is located at the bottom rather than the top. The main advantage of such a freezer is that commonly used items such as milk and vegetables can be easily found since they are kept at an eye level.
- Side-by-side refrigerators: These types of refrigerators are split in half, with the freezer on the left and the main compartments on the right. They also allow you to place food at an eye level, so you don’t have to reach or bend over to get them. They have an average capacity of 531 to 700 litres.
- French door refrigerators: These types of refrigerators mix style with compatibility. They have two doors for the refrigerator compartment, with a freezer drawer at the bottom. Their advantages include ample storage space, wider shelves and deeper space to store frozen items.
3. Energy Efficiency: Always look for the energy efficiency star label, which tells how much energy the unit consumes. A higher star rating on the refrigerator means it is more energy efficient.
